Every ingredient in Your Best Friend earns its place in the bag. Here's exactly what's in the recipe, what it does for your dog, and why we chose it.
Why we chose it: Real fish, not a filler protein, as the base of the recipe. Fish meal is a concentrated protein source, rendering removes moisture, so it delivers more usable protein per pound than fresh meat.
What it does: Supplies high-quality amino acids for lean muscle, plus naturally occurring EPA and DHA (omega-3 fatty acids) that support skin barrier function and a healthy coat. Especially valuable for doodles, long-haired and double-coated breeds.
Why we chose it: Added alongside the meals to boost the recipe's real-salmon content and reinforce the omega-3 profile.
What it does: Contributes additional EPA and DHA, the same marine omega-3s associated with coat shine and skin health in dogs.
Why we chose it: These are more digestible, nutrient-dense carbohydrate sources than cheap fillers like corn gluten meal or brewers rice. Quinoa and buckwheat are also naturally gluten-free.
What it does: Provides steady, digestible energy, B-vitamins, and fiber to support normal digestion, without the empty calories of low-quality grain byproducts.
Why we chose it: Plant-based sources of ALA, a third type of omega-3 fatty acid, to complement the marine omega-3s from salmon.
What it does: Rounds out the fatty acid profile and adds soluble fiber that supports healthy digestion and stool quality.
Why we chose it: We chose canola oil over chicken fat specifically so this recipe works for dogs whose owners are managing a chicken sensitivity, a common concern we hear from long-haired breed owners.
What it does: A concentrated energy source and carrier for fat-soluble vitamins, preserved naturally with Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) instead of synthetic preservatives like BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin.
Why we chose it: Real whole-food ingredients, not synthetic additives, to round out the recipe's nutrient and antioxidant profile.
What it does: Pumpkin adds gentle, fermentable fiber for digestive support. Apple and blueberry contribute natural antioxidants. Kale adds vitamins A and K along with additional antioxidant support.
Why we chose it: A naturally occurring fiber, typically derived from chicory root, that feeds the beneficial bacteria already living in your dog's gut.
What it does: Supports a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a role in digestion and overall immune function.
Why we chose it: This is a heat-stable, spore-forming probiotic strain, meaning it survives the extrusion (cooking) process better than many probiotic strains. What's on the label is more likely to still be active when it reaches the bowl.
What it does: Early research on Bacillus coagulans show it's associated with supporting digestive resilience during dietary changes.
Why we chose it: A natural fermentation byproduct that works alongside the pre- and probiotics in the recipe for a complete gut-health approach.
What it does: Contains bioactive compounds shown to support a healthy gut lining and immune response.
Why we chose it: A natural, insoluble fiber source that supports stool quality without relying on low-quality grain fillers.
What it does: Helps regulate digestion and supports consistent, well-formed stools.
Why we chose it: A natural antioxidant we use to help preserve the fats in the recipe, instead of synthetic preservatives.
What it does: Slows oxidation of the recipe's fats, supporting shelf life naturally.
Why we chose it: We add guaranteed minimums of taurine and L-Carnitine specifically to support heart health — not just whatever occurs naturally in the base ingredients, but real guaranteed levels on the label.
What it does: Taurine and L-Carnitine are amino acids linked to healthy heart muscle function. Choline, also included, supports normal liver and brain function. For goldendoodle owners this matters in particular: golden retrievers, half of a goldendoodle's heritage, have been a focus of veterinary research into diet and taurine-related heart health. The full vitamin and mineral premix rounds out the recipe to meet AAFCO's nutrient profile for all life stages, covering everything from immune function to bone development.
What you won't find in this recipe: chicken, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives.
